Tie Dye Duster & Lace Up Hoodie: A Little Bit Unusual

Tie dye duster, lace up hoodie and boyfriend jeans. Casual weekend outfit.

I’m not always a huge fan of change, but sometimes change is good…

…I have found over the years, that few things make me feel more like a new person than changing my hair. A new cut or color or both just shakes things up for most women. I think maybe it’s because our hair is something that we wear every single day; it’s always there, it’s part of our identity.

I first started coloring my own hair when I was fourteen; I was the highlight queen throughout high school. Then I started dabbling in full head color changes; every shade of blonde known to man, dark brown (which is closest to my natural color) with multi-colored highlights, blonde with a black under layer, and every shade of red from strawberry blonde to the deepest auburn.

I’ve never been one to shy away from the scissors either, although I have learned through experience that super short hair is not a good look on me. I’m lucky in that my hair grows insanely fast so if I do cut it off, it’s back before I know it. The last few years I’ve been getting a shorter, shaggier cut in the Fall and then I grow it back out for Summer because I like the option of messy buns and ponytails.

The red/blonde ombre that I’ve been rocking for the last several years is my favorite and also somewhat of an anomaly. Up until this color combo it was rare for my hair to remain the same color for long. Even so, I started feeling restless lately so I knew a change was imminent. It started with a few pink and purple streaks. Then last week I decided I wanted an entire head of inhuman hair color. Which led to my new color scheme; I like to call it “tropical sunset”. Seriously though, isn’t that what it looks like? It does to me with the purple, pink and coral shades all blending together; it includes all of my favorite colors and I’m really loving it.

Eventually I’m sure that I’ll go back to the red/blonde ombre, but for the foreseeable future I’ll be maintaining this combo because it’s fun, it makes me happy and it’s more than a little bit unusual. And in hair as in most things, I’m a big fan of unusual.

My newfound obsession with love of anything hoodie or lace up went into overdrive when I found this lace up hoodie on an excursion to Target. I actually bought the teal in store, but then ordered the gray online. It’s lightweight and makes the perfect layering piece now, but will also work well on cool summer evenings.

The tie dye duster is technically a dress. Instead I chose to wear it unbuttoned and layered over the hoodie and jeans as a duster/jacket. I love anything that can be worn multiple ways because it gives you so many options. The colors are gorgeous and not coincidentally, worked well with the ‘do.

The jeans are my favorite distressed boyfriends from Blank NYC. Although I love them, they were too long and I was never happy with how thick the cuffs were when I rolled them so I cut them off for easier rolling. That was admittedly a little scary, but I went for it anyway. I chose not to roll them with this outfit though, because I was really kind of digging the frayed look at the hem.

Be brave, be bold; try something different and shake up your world a little bit. Whether it’s something fairly simple, like cutting your favorite jeans a bit shorter or something more bold like sunset colored hair; just go for it. Everybody can use a little shake up once in awhile…it keeps you on your toes and prevents apathy from setting in.

I love the new hair Debbie!!
It is amazing how our hair can make us feel either so good or so bad. I remember when I first got my first wig—I felt like a totally different woman (we even named me Glenda for when I was wearing it). I wish my hair grew fast…I have a feeling I’d be better off with shorter hair, but it’s such a process to grow it back out—and I do like having the variety with long hair. Time will only tell!!

I agree that our hair becomes our identity.

As a natural blond keeping this red shade up is mega maintenance but it now feels like “me”. I think I wouldn’t recognize myself as a blond plus 90% of my wardrobe wouldn’t look as good on me.

I love this fun colour addition on you.

Love the hair!!! Did I read this post correctly? Did you color it yourself? If so, how do you even begin to choose a product? You are definitely talented in so many ways. By the way, I never thought of just cutting my jeans without then hemming them. I’m super short (4’11”) and can rarely find jeans that are the right length. Since the distressed/frayed look is in, I think I should take advantage of it before it goes out of style and just give it a try:) I’m looking for a pair of scissors as soon as I send this message! Thanks for all your insight and tips.

I was just thinking of how interestingly rainbow unicorn your hair looked in these pictures, Debbie, thinking that it was perhaps a trick of lighting then I read your post and all was made clear ☺ I love it. You know my views on hair Colour, and anything bold and bright is always top on my list. At the end of the day, it’s just hair. A blank canvas xoxo

OMG I LOVE your hair!! It looks absolutely stunning on you. I actually stopped dyeing my hair about five or six years ago. I wanted to go completely natural (and I was going through a real healthy phase and didn’t want to put any more chemicals on my head!) so now when I want a change, it’s the style that changes. Currently, it’s driving me crazy because I’m growing out my pixie and I find it such a mess lol. But it grows quite fast so in a couple of months I should be happier with it again!
Your outfit is FAB! I love the duster – it’s such a fun idea. I really should try and find one myself. I do love those colours!
