Seriously 2016, I am so over you…
…Unless you’ve been living in a cave without access to technology, then my opening statement needs no further explanation. In the last three days we have lost four more beloved cultural icons; George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and George S. Irving. Who is George S. Irving? The freakin’ Heat Miser, that’s who. As if the macabre Who’s Who death list of 2016 wasn’t already enough, you took the Heat Miser too? What the hell 2016?
I think that you would be hard-pressed to find another year in history that was so universally awful for the majority of the population of planet Earth then 2016. We had to suffer through that God-awful presidential campaign along with the even more God-awful result, and by “we” I do not mean only the citizens of the United States; this was one election that has had and will continue to have a far reaching negative impact on the entire world. Add to the that the unprecedented number of deaths of those who brought so much light, hope, humor, and entertainment to us as a people and it makes your heart hurt; at least mine does.
Those of us in our 40’s and 50’s took a particular hit to our childhood and teen years. “One Day At A Time”, “The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams”, “Barney Miller” and “The Brady Bunch” were favorites of mine when I was young. This year saw the passing of Schneider, Grizzly Adams, Fish, Detective Harris and Mrs. Brady.
Not to mention the voice of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny, Willy Wonka, Stefano DiMera (yes, I was addicted to “Days of Our Lives”), R2-D2, Princess Leia and my beloved Heat Miser. As if that wasn’t enough, 2016 tore through my erstwhile teenage years/early 20’s like a wrecking ball and took David Bowie, Prince, Vanity, and George Michael.
I’m telling you, January 1st cannot come soon enough…
This is one of those outfits that probably most clearly defines who I am. The perfect juxtaposition of the super feminine pink lace trimmed cami with the moto jacket (which by the way, is currently on sale for under $60!) and distressed jeans is who I am. The yin and the yang; the good and the bad; the princess and the rebel…all of that wrapped up in one simple outfit.
The lace trimmed cami would make a fine top on it’s own, but: a) it’s freakin’ cold outside, b) I’d be sharing a whole lot more cleavage with the world then I like and c) I really love the look of a cami or slip dress layered over a tee shirt. Sorry I didn’t get any shots without the moto jacket, but see “a” in the previous sentence.
My Blank NYC distressed boyfriend jeans are my current favorite. Like the one’s I’m wearing (they are no longer available), this pair is distressed, but has lining behind the distressing to keep out the arctic chill.
Having a go-to look makes it so much easier to get dressed on those days when either you don’t know what to wear or you aren’t feeling particularly motivated to make an effort. My go-to is an outfit that pairs pieces that are opposites, especially when the elements are good girl vs. bad girl.
If you’re looking for your own go-to look, start by thinking about what you feel most comfortable in; what are you wearing when you feel most like yourself? Once you’ve established what that is, look for pieces in your closet that can be paired with one another to achieve that look.
