If you look verrryy carefully at this photo…
THE STORY
…you’ll see that I’m inside my carefully constructed snow photo pit. What’s a snow photo pit? Is it a new cutting edge piece of photography gear? Nah. It’s the hole you have to dig into a foot of snow in order to take photos for your style blog. And since it’s in a foot of snow “pit” felt like more of an appropriate descriptor than “hole”. In light of the fact I’m inside a snow pit I think it’s safe to say winter has really, truly officially arrived. Good thing I didn’t buy into what that fat ground dwelling squirrel had to say about the early arrival of spring because I’d be sorely disappointed.
Here’s the thing though, ever since the arrival in my life of God’s gift to blog photography, the 50mm lens, I’m really kind of digging snow…no pun intended, but it was a pretty good one. With the right aperture setting falling snow makes me look like I’m inside a snow globe and I’m really kinda loving it. It almost makes freezing my fingers off worth it. These shots actually have more of the snow globe effect because it was snowing a bit more briskly that day. Let me preface this by saying I’m an entirely self-taught photographer, but if you have DSLR camera and are still using your kit lens that came with it, your next investment needs to be a 50mm lens. They aren’t insanely expensive; mine is a Canon and it was under $120 on Amazon. Believe me, it’s money well spent. Even if you aren’t a blogger, but love taking family pictures and other random snaps it’s worth considering. I haven’t had it that long and really only know a fraction of what’s it’s capable of. I got some great Christmas tree shots that wouldn’t have been possible with the kit lens, and I can’t wait to use it for nature shots and our summer family portraits.
THE OUTFIT
This time I wore my Free People boho tunic as a tunic instead of as a dress over an extender like I did here. My new found love of leggings continues so I did the easy thing and layered it over a pair. The over the knee boots were necessary not only from a fashion standpoint, but from a “there’s a foot of snow and it’s cold outside” standpoint. The scarf really ended up being the star of the show here. It was a Christmas gift from my adopted mom who lives next door. The mauve/lavender color picks up the same shade in the boho tunic and the scalloped ruffles added a really cool texture to the outfit. Because the scarf was a standout on it’s own, no necklace was necessary. The long cardigan added a layer of warmth, but it’s still lightweight enough to work well into spring and on cool summer nights.
THE TIP
Oftentimes it can be one small piece that makes the difference in an outfit. It can be a scarf like I have on today, a bandana (yes, I’m time trippin’ to the 80’s) made this jeans and tee look special, a vest over a simple outfit, or maybe a broach in an unexpected place.

It is a pretty sweet lens. And like I said, inexpensive as far as lenses go. Best investment Santa ever made.
Your outfit is so cute! And I love the snow falling in the pictures! I purchased a 50mm lens a couple of months ago and I love it

Ha,ha, snow pit! Bravo for braving the temperature! It’s been freezing here too but nothing like your snow just spectacular frosts in the morning.
Love, love, love the ruffle scarf - the perfect piece for your tunic top and the colours of both are beautiful. Clever adopted mum!
Oh and I need to talk to you about lens and cameras. I’m wanting to upgrade mine to a DSLR but the choice is mind boggling for a techno-idiot like me!

Thanks Dawn! I’m entirely self-taught, I learned through practice. I have a small remote with a timer and I also use a tripod. It makes it so much easier so I don’t have to depend on someone else to take my photos.
This tunic is so pretty! Love the purple on you!

I do love your pics, they are very professional looking. Glad the lens is working out well for you. I usually get a friend photographer to take mine as I don’t have a camera but lately have been thinking of getting one. Do you use a tripod to take the self shots?
Yes, I use both a tripod and a remote with a timer.
You have impressed me with all the different ways you have styled this blush floral tunic which always looks amazing on you. Love the ruffly matching scarf pretty Debbie.
Happy Monday my friend!
