Wrap Midi Skirt & Concert Tee Shirt: The Mullet Life

Wrap midi skirt, concert tee shirt, and Birkenstocks.

The town where I live is the quintessential American steel mill small town…

THE STORY

…Actually I live in theย suburbs farm country surrounding said small town. Back in it’s heyday, when the mills were booming, it was a busy place. In the years since the mills closed, not so much. The population is under 6,000. Trust me when I say there is no urban trendiness going on in these parts.

The other day as I was driving down Main Street (as in any self-respecting American small town, it is actually called Main Street), I made an observation. Within spitting distance of one another are three hair salons. And that’s just on Main Street; that’s not counting the salons on side streets and just outside of town. Now here’s the irony…I have always called our town “The Mullet Capital of the World”. And I ain’t lyin’. You cannot cruise through town and not see at least a couple of mullets. How can there be such a plethora of hair salons and yet 75% of the population is sporting mullets?

And don’t even get me started on the Walmart. I don’t often go to that particular Walmart unless I have a reason. It has an actual yellow caution sign on the door reminding customers to check their car to make sure they didn’t leave their children inside. I kid you not my friends. If you need to be reminded not to forget your kids in the car, perhaps parenting isn’t your strong suit. Need I say more? In any case, the Walmart is the epicenter of all mullet activity.

There is one older gentleman whom I’ve seen there on a number of occasions over the years; and he must be there a lot because as I said, I don’t go there often, but he’s usually there somewhere. This man is fully committed to living the mullet life. His hair is white, and the party in the back is literally down to his mid-back while the front is straight up Billy Ray Cyrus perfection. None of this is judgement mind you, it’s purely observation.

THE OUTFIT

The 90’s called…they want their Matchbox Twenty concert tee shirt back. Well, too bad because I’m cuttin’ it up and rockin’ it like it’s 1997. Actually, it’s my husband’s. I dug it out of a dark forgotten corner of his closet and commandeered it for myself. And of course I took the scissors to it. Yes, it’s currently trendy to wear cut up tee shirts, but I’ve been slicing and dicing tees since forever.

Funny thing about me and band tees; no matter how cool the tee is, I’ll only wear it if either I actually saw the band in concert or if I’m really into them. Otherwise I feel kind of like a poser. And yes, we saw Matchbox Twenty back in 1997 so this one is legit. On a side note, I always thought Rob Thomas was a delicious human being, but if you google him and check out the images…man, he has aged like a fine wine. Just sayin’.

I found this fabulous striped wrap midi skirt on sale at GAP. It’s so soft and drapey…I’m in love. Although it does have it’s slight issues. It’s clingy through the waist/hip area so every bump and bulge shows which makes tucking a shirt a challenge (especially a men’s shirt) and the wrap doesn’t overlap a whole lot which isn’t really an issue unless it’s windy. Which of course it was the day that I wore it. Neither of these is a deal breaker though because it is a great skirt and it’s super easy to throw on.

As for the silver Birks, they’re my daughters. They aren’t actually the right size for me, but I only wore them long enough to go out for Father’s Day lunch. I thought they were perfect with the gray skirt. And I could not bring myself to wear the brown pair with this outfit; as I explained in Monday’s post they are the only shoes that I own that fit me at the moment.

Goodness, Debbie, how you must raise eyebrows with your non conformist pink/coral/lilac hair and, heavens, the absence of a mullet!!! Hahaha. You described Kuching (where I’m from) quite perfectly albeit ours isn’t so much Billy Ray Cyrus influence as it is the broccoli head. What that means is dudes perm the top/front into tight ramen-esque curls (where the mullet top should sit) and the back is straight down, as long possible, like broccoli stems. I find that rather unappealing. Suffice to say I never did date anyone of my own ethnicity GRIN

Bahaha!! Broccoli head…that’s hysterical! The funny thing about my hair color is that almost every time I’m out someone compliments me on it. I’ve had teenagers, elderly women, women my age, men…you name it, actually come up to me and tell me how much they like my hair. Strange (but nice) considering where I am…

And they strut around, literally, like dandy peacocks SMH I’m glad, the aptitude of openness and tolerance. I’m home right now to see my parents, and it’s still as backward as it was when I left almost 30 years ago ๐Ÿ™‚ I suppose many find comfort in the status quo xo

Isn’t it a great skirt, Ruth? I love gray so I had to have it. Yes, my daughter is 13 and we wear roughly the same size in most things. She borrows from me more than I do from her though…lol!

Never thought I’d find Birks stylish but you have changed my view. I love your hair style. What would you call it?

Do you mean the color? It’s rose gold with burgundy/purple at the roots. ๐Ÿ™‚ I was never a fan of Birks either until a year or so ago and they kind of grew on me. It’s a good thing, because my foot is still swollen from surgery last month so they only pair of shoes that I own that fit are my Birks.

I have some foot issues for the first time in my life so I’m taking note. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks! I also was wondering what you call the style of your hair. A longish shag? Looks beautiful.

I think long shag probably is the right description. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have a ton of hair so having a lot of layers is necessary to keep it tamed down…lol

I can so relate! I live in a town of about 3000. It is resort town though the tourists can add tens of thousands at times. Its fun though. I’ve lived in the city and it was fun too. Love your tee and the story! Thank you for joining the Ladies Who Link Up party today! Peace!
