Floral Kimono & Boyfriend Jeans: Flower Or Weed?

I’ve thought about this before, but forgot about it until I was mowing the yard this weekend. At what point in our lives do dandelions stop being pretty flowers and become weeds? I know, my mind works in peculiar ways; but think about it for a minute. If you have kids or if you ever were a kid, you know what I’m talking about. I can’t tell you how many wilty little bouquets I used to get, sometimes with roots and leaves attached. I would oooh and aaahh and place them in water for us to admire and all the while that little face would be beaming because, “Look mommy, I got you flowers!” And I did the same for my mom when I was little. So when exactly did it occur to me that no, they aren’t pretty flowers they are annoying weeds that left unchecked will take over the entire yard? Does it happen as a result of simply growing up, or is it a touch of cynicism as our view of the world changes because we woke up one day and reality hit us in the face? Just something to think about. You know, because you needed something deep and philosophical to mull over on a Monday.

I have to say, this floral kimono still holds the number one spot in my rather extensive kimono collection (in my opinion, anything over two is a collection). The colors are so vibrant and it looks good with so many things. This is my favorite way to wear it though. I like the hit of pretty girliness it brings to denim, particularly boyfriend jeans. Fashion laws seem to dictate that if you’re going loose and slouchy on the top you should go streamlined on the bottom and vice versa. But you know my thoughts on rules. I think if either the top or bottom is slouchy without being bulky (sort of drapey I suppose) then you can pair two looser fitting pieces together.

Floral Kimono & Faux Leather Leggings: The Final Countdown

This is it my friends; the last few days until my birthday. And it’s a big one. With a “0” in it. No, it’s not 30. To be perfectly honest with you, 50 scares me a lot less than 40, and 40 wasn’t as terrifying as 30. 30 was terrifying for the simple fact my mother passed away when she was 34 so when I turned 30 all I wanted was to be 35 because I had it in my head that I would die at 34 as well. Obviously that didn’t happen. My fear of 40 was simply based on vanity because man, that sounded old. Now that 50 has arrived I’ve amassed a trove of infinite wisdom and ya know what? It is what is. Like I’ve said many times, I have the taste of a twelve year old girl and the sense of humor of a twelve year old boy so 50 is purely arbitrary. I’m gonna own 50 and I’m gonna kick 50’s ass. So, how do you like me now?

With that being said my damn near 50 year old self is rocking the leather leggings with a floral kimono and a sweatshirt. And I strongly believe I will continue to do so when I’m 70. Can I just tell you how much I love this tunic sweatshirt? I scored it from Townhouse Boutique. They sell their items via Facebook and Instagram on kind of a first come, first served basis. When it popped up in my email I immediately wanted it because it was so me. It’s soft and comfortable, but not at all bulky. I’ll be able to wear it well into the spring and summer on cooler evenings too. The floral kimono has been in my closet since the great kimono binge of Spring 2014. It’s probably the one I wear the most because I love the colors so much. I wanted to add some visual interest to the sweatshirt and leggings and I knew it was just the ticket. I went with the taupe fringe booties because black was just too predictable and if there’s one thing I’m not, it’s predictable.

Year In Review Part One: Favorite Outfits January Thru June 2014

What kind of style blogger would I be if I didn’t do an end of the year review of my favorite outfits from 2014? I figured the most logical way to do it would be to choose one per month. And since I didn’t want to overwhelm you with waaayyy too many pictures of me in one post (really, nobody needs that) I decided to split it into two days. Today for your viewing pleasure…January thru June.
And here’s something to look forward to. My daughter and I are taking a little road trip today to the mall because her Justice gift cards will apparently self-destruct if they aren’t used in an expeditious manner. My regular readers will know what that means…some insanely fabulous redneck story about some unbelievable thing we see on the way there. Don’t believe me? Read herehere or here for evidence, lest you think I exaggerate.

Makeup Genius: Overalls, Kimono And Gladiator Sandals

I haven’t ever discussed makeup here because I found what works for me years ago and pretty much stick to it. Don’t get me wrong, I love makeup and can do a killer smoky eye. I love nothing more than wandering aimlessly through Ulta just checking everything out. But for my every day look I stick with what I know looks good.
Yesterday while I was looking through the latest issue of Allure, I found this little blurb about a new free smart phone app that L’Oreal has. It sounded intriguing so I immediately checked it out. Holy cow you guys! It is so freakin’ cool! It’s called Makeup Genius. All you do is hold your camera in front of your face and it scans you. Then you can “try on” all different kinds of lippies, eyeshadows, liners, etc. And it’s in real time and moves with you. It’s not a still photo of your face…once you have say a lip color on, you can smile and make weird faces and the color stays right there perfectly placed on your lips. It’s like your actually wearing it! I’m pretty sure I can waste hours of my life playing with it. I don’t typically wear L’Oreal makeup, but this app gives you a good idea what shades look good on you so you could then look for similar shades in other brands. A few of the lip shades looked really good so I might even give them a shot.
How about these sandals? I was scouting around for a pair of lace up gladiators and I found these little gems at TJ Maxx. I really love the lace up detail on these leopard print sandals so I wanted a pair of flats as well. Originally I was looking for nude or light brown, but I really liked the snake print so home with me they came. My kimonos have become my new cardigans. When I leave the house I typically grab one to throw over whatever I’m wearing. I knew my big kimono buying spree wouldn’t turn out to be a waste of money! One last thing, I don’t usually mention my jewelry, but I had to tell you this necklace came from Walmart. Yes. Walmart. Typically when an item makes it’s way to there that signifies the death of a trend. Fortunately for me I could give a damn about whether somethings trendy and $10 for a statement necklace makes me a happy girl.
