Personal style is a matter of taste...not age.

Faux Leather Pencil Skirt, Plaid Sweatshirt & Black Pumps: Stealth Professional

02.13.2015

At first glance you might be thinking, “Um, Debbie, what are you doing dressing all professional-like for work?” Never fear my friends, it’s not as it first appears. I called this outfit “stealth professional” on Instagram the other day because at first glance it appears that way, but upon closer inspection, maybe not. The pencil skirt is faux leather. And the plaid top is a sweatshirt. See, no need to worry. I haven’t been taken over by an alien being who is controlling my mind and forcing me to dress like a grown up with a job. Ain’t no mind control gonna make that happen. I like to have fun with my clothes and that includes my work wear. I never ever dress provocatively or in poor taste for work, but what most people consider professional is just too restrictive for me. Trust me, I can throw together a smokin’ professional look just as well as anyone (Exhibit A), but even then, I have to throw in something to make it unique and maybe a bit rebellious. If I don’t, it’s just not me. And that, in my opinion, is what personal style is all about. It tells the world a little something about who you are without speaking a word.

My lovely friend Alice at Happiness At Midlife posted a link to this outrageously cool faux leather pencil skirt from Ann Taylor on her Facebook page and the rest is history. I scored it for under $35 and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty great. It looks and feels like the real deal, and it’s so comfortable. The skirt I originally ordered was too large and the return process was super easy and quick. I’m so happy I found it…thanks Alice! I haven’t given the plaid sweatshirt a spin for awhile so I decided it was time. I layered the red chiffon blouse underneath for the visual interest it provided and since I just wasn’t feeling boots that day I went with the black pumps. No, I wasn’t running around in all of this snow and ice in pumps…my trusty Bearpaws were waiting patiently in the car.

Plaid’s Last Stand: Plaid Sweatshirt, Black Cropped Trousers And Leopard Print Ankle Boot

03.27.2014

I figured since yesterday we had one last blast of winter complete with snow and 0 degree wind chills I’d give the plaid sweatshirt one last go round. I’m not saying you won’t see me wearing it over the summer on a cool night with a pair of cutoffs, it just won’t be in regular rotation anymore. Today is supposed to be near 50 and the next ten days are more of the same so I think the “S” word is finally really here. In the next week or so I’ll start moving some of my winter stuff to the attic for storage. This sweatshirt will definitely dodge the bullet because I love it so much. There’s always a night or two once warm weather hits when the temperature is cool, we have a fire out back, and a sweatshirt is definitely in order so she won’t go unloved until October.
I gotta tell ya, I’m straight up exhausted. This week state mandated testing started at school, and I can’t emphasize how much that sucks the life out of me. Yesterday was particularly rough. It kicked my butt, stuffed me in a box and tied it up with a bow. I could go back to bed right now and stay there. Maybe for days. Since that’s not an option, I’ll have to wear something particularly fabulous today to make me feel better. Isn’t it funny how sometimes a fabulous outfit makes everything just a little bit better?

Plaid Tuxedo: Black Tuxedo Pants, Plaid Sweatshirt And Red Pumps

02.13.2014

Had ya goin’ there for a minute didn’t I? Although, a plaid tuxedo does exist. Check it out, it’s actually kinda cool.  I styled the pants a little bit differently this time and liked them much better. Sadly though, I don’t know how much I’m going to wear them. By the time I got to work it looked like I was wearing a big ball of dryer lint instead of pants. And I didn’t wear my fur coat over them this time. Any little bit of lint or hair floating in the atmosphere is immediately attracted to these pants. I was attracting lint from as far away as Neptune. I kid you not. I had Neptunian lint on my pants. Fortunately I had a lint roller with me, but having to roll them several times in a day makes them just a little bit too high maintenance for me. On the bright side, I do so love this sweatshirt that I was at least happy on the top half all day. And half happy is better than no happy. Oh, and one more thing. Look at my feet. Shoes, people, shoes! I couldn’t take it anymore so I wore my warm woolies to work and then switched into these. So I guess that means I was three quarters happy today. (I know. I could do that everyday, but usually the overwhelming need for warmth trumps the need for my shoes!)

Cozy Plaid

01.10.2014

I love plaid.  I’ll admit it, I have a problem.  I’m a plaidoholic.  When I saw this sweatshirt I knew it must be mine.  Not only because it’s plaid, but because it’s a sweatshirt.  Two of my favorite things combined into one little bit of perfection.  It only gets softer every time I wash it which makes me love it more.  It really doesn’t take much to make me happy…
