Kimono & Tee Shirt Dress: May To December

05.27.2015

No, the title is not in reference to romance of the questionable variety. It is in reference to the weather. One of the joys of living in northwestern Pennsylvania is unless is it July or January, dressing for the weather is always an adventure in uncertainty. [Read more…]

Camo Shorts & Long Vest: What A Difference A Night Makes

05.13.2015

Sometimes the simplest things fascinate me. Take trees for instance. Once winter begins to fade away like a bad dream, tiny buds show up on the trees. Those buds seem to be there for weeks. Just taunting you with the promise of summer. Then one day you wake up and boom; the trees are covered in leaves. Like maybe the leaf fairies stopped by while you were sleeping (they only work at night, much like the tooth fairy). It’s a veritable leaf explosion. And it’s seemingly overnight. I know, it’s an entire complex process; I have been teaching science you know. Ya, I’m a regular Bill Nye the Science Guy. But in a skirt and heels. And maybe a little less nerdy. But I digress. Process or not, the leaf thing fascinates me. One day you don’t see ’em, the next day you do. The world is indeed a mysterious place my friends.

This outfit is a prime example of how you can take a simple pair of camo shorts and a t-shirt and dress them up and make them work appropriate (although it does depend on where you work) with a few added pieces. I went with my heeled sandals as opposed to Converse, threw on the ever present statement necklace and then…added the magical third piece (see here for an explanation of the third piece rule). The third piece would be the long vest; which by the way I refuse to call a “sleeveless blazer”. It’s a vest people, seriously, the definition of a sleeveless jacket would be…a vest. Anyhow, the vest added that little extra something to pull it all together. Probably the most important thing to consider if you are going to wear shorts to work is are they appropriate? Obviously wearing your denim bootie shorts (if you own denim bootie shorts that is…no judgement here) isn’t going to be your best choice. Make sure they are the right length. These for example, hit right above the knee. When I wear them in real life I usually roll them a few times. Also, you want them to be the right material, nothing to sheer. Just think skirts. What length and material of skirts would you wear to work? I always use that as a guideline. Finally, like I said above you other pieces need to skew on the dressier side (heels, blazer, etc.) that way you’re sure to elevate your shorts from the casual zone to the work zone.

Floral Sweatshirt, Khakis & Ballet Flats: Water’s On…

03.30.2015

…Well, sort of. After a week with no drinking water (see here for the scoop), the minions from the water company once again hand delivered a flyer. It said the water was fixed…but not really. The metal content is apparently within “legal limits”, but it will still smell and taste funny. You can drink it, but if you’re unsure whether you should, then contact your family physician. Wait…what? I can drink it, but perhaps I should ask my doctor about it first?! No thank you very much. I do believe I will stick to my gallon jugs of water from the store. It seems to me if I need to talk to my doctor for a second opinion on my drinking water then maybe I’ll just pass on that. Like I said the other day; you have one job water company, one job.

This floral sweatshirt was one of only two things I found when I went on my birthday money shopping expedition. Did you ever notice when you have money that is earmarked just for you, to spend on whatever you want, you can’t find anything you want? This top was definitely a keeper though. It’s a lightweight sweatshirt so I’ll be able to wear it all year, and it’s covered in irises. Who doesn’t love irises? I have them growing in bunches of spots in my yard so obviously I do. The neckbling and cobalt ballet flats added an extra hit of fancy while the khakis kept it all simple and casual.

Faux Leather Pencil Skirt, Plaid Sweatshirt & Black Pumps: Stealth Professional

02.13.2015

At first glance you might be thinking, “Um, Debbie, what are you doing dressing all professional-like for work?” Never fear my friends, it’s not as it first appears. I called this outfit “stealth professional” on Instagram the other day because at first glance it appears that way, but upon closer inspection, maybe not. The pencil skirt is faux leather. And the plaid top is a sweatshirt. See, no need to worry. I haven’t been taken over by an alien being who is controlling my mind and forcing me to dress like a grown up with a job. Ain’t no mind control gonna make that happen. I like to have fun with my clothes and that includes my work wear. I never ever dress provocatively or in poor taste for work, but what most people consider professional is just too restrictive for me. Trust me, I can throw together a smokin’ professional look just as well as anyone (Exhibit A), but even then, I have to throw in something to make it unique and maybe a bit rebellious. If I don’t, it’s just not me. And that, in my opinion, is what personal style is all about. It tells the world a little something about who you are without speaking a word.

My lovely friend Alice at Happiness At Midlife posted a link to this outrageously cool faux leather pencil skirt from Ann Taylor on her Facebook page and the rest is history. I scored it for under $35 and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty great. It looks and feels like the real deal, and it’s so comfortable. The skirt I originally ordered was too large and the return process was super easy and quick. I’m so happy I found it…thanks Alice! I haven’t given the plaid sweatshirt a spin for awhile so I decided it was time. I layered the red chiffon blouse underneath for the visual interest it provided and since I just wasn’t feeling boots that day I went with the black pumps. No, I wasn’t running around in all of this snow and ice in pumps…my trusty Bearpaws were waiting patiently in the car.
